Memantine Biogaran is used for the treatment of patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.
Each tablet contains:
Active substance: Memantine hydrochloride – 10 mg (equivalent to 8.31 mg of memantine base)
Memantine Biogaran contains the active substance memantine hydrochloride. It belongs to a group of medicines calledanti-dementia medicines.
Memory loss associated with Alzheimer's disease is believed to be due to a disruption in message signals in the brain. The brain has NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors that are involved in the transmission of nerve signals and are important for learning and memory.
Memantine Biogaran is an NMDA receptor antagonist. It works by acting on these receptors to improve the transmission of nerve signals and enhance memory.
Memantine Biogaran is used for the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.
For adults and elderly patients, the recommended dose is 20 mg once daily.
To reduce the risk of side effects, the dose is gradually increased according to the following schedule:
Week 1: Half a 10 mg tablet (5 mg) once daily
Week 2: One 10 mg tablet once daily
Week 3: One and a half 10 mg tablets (15 mg) once daily
Week 4 and onwards: Two 10 mg tablets or one 20 mg tablet once daily
At the start of treatment, you will take 5 mg daily (half of a 10 mg tablet). This dose will be increased by 5 mg each week until the recommended maintenance dose of 20 mg daily is reached.
If you have kidney problems, your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your condition. Kidney function should be monitored regularly by your doctor in such cases.
Memantine Biogaran is taken orally once daily, at the same time each day.
It may be taken with or without food.
Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the blister or carton.
The expiry date refers to the last day of the indicated month.
No special storage conditions are required.
