Active ingredient: Tirzepatide (dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist)
Mounjaro is a prescription medication for adults with type 2 diabetes. It is used to control blood glucose levels.
It is also indicated for the treatment of adults with obesity or overweight (BMI ≥ 27 kg/m²) who have weight-related health problems, such as:
Prediabetes
Type 2 diabetes
Hypertension
Dyslipidemia
Each pen contains four fixed doses (4 doses × 15 mg = 60 mg of tirzepatide), sufficient for one month of once-weekly injections.
Mounjaro is the first dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist that works by:
Reducing blood glucose levels
Supporting the pancreas to produce more insulin
Decreasing glucose production by the liver
Slowing gastric emptying
Prolonging the feeling of fullness
Reducing food intake
These effects help maintain stable blood glucose levels throughout the day.
Common side effects (≥5% of patients):
Nausea
Diarrhea
Decreased appetite
Vomiting
Constipation
Dyspepsia
Abdominal pain
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:
Signs of allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing
Contact your doctor if you experience:
Severe stomach problems
Gallbladder problems with symptoms
Stomach pain after eating
Kidney issues (reduced or absent urination)
Swelling of ankles or legs
Fatigue or shortness of breath
Contraindications:
Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)
Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2)
Allergy to tirzepatide
Warnings:
Inform your doctor if you have a history of pancreatic or kidney disease
Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
May reduce the effectiveness of contraceptive pills
Administer a subcutaneous injection once weekly into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm at any time of day
Use the same day each week
Each pen contains four fixed doses, enough for one month
Starting dose: 2.5 mg subcutaneously once weekly
After 4 weeks: increase to 5 mg subcutaneously once weekly
If additional glycemic control is required: increase by 2.5 mg increments every 4 weeks, up to a maximum of 15 mg once weekly
Do not change your dose without your doctor’s approval
Unused pen: store in the refrigerator at 2–8°C; do not freeze
Unopened pen remains valid until the expiration date when refrigerated
After first use: store at room temperature ≤30°C for up to 30 days, away from heat and sunlight
Discard the pen 30 days after first use, even if medication remains
Use Mounjaro only under medical supervision
