Alikval is used to treat type 2 diabetes in adult patients. It is prescribed when blood sugar levels cannot be controlled by diet and exercise alone. This medication helps regulate blood glucose levels.
Your doctor may prescribe Alikval as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic medications if those alone are not sufficiently effective.
Type 2 diabetes develops when the body either does not produce enough insulin or the insulin produced is not effective. It can also occur when the body produces too much glucagon.
Insulin helps lower blood sugar, especially after meals.
Glucagon causes the liver to produce sugar, raising blood sugar levels.
Both are produced in the pancreas.
