Methylcobalamin is a coenzyme form of vitamin B12 and represents its biologically active form, which does not require conversion. It is instantly and fully absorbed by the body. Other forms of B12, such as cyanocobalamin, must undergo metabolism in the liver—a process that is often inefficient in the body. Methylcobalamin is the only neuroactive form of vitamin B12, which accumulates in neural tissue more extensively than its homologs. Its effect is 130–150 times greater than cyanocobalamin.

Methylcobalamin has high biological activity. It participates in the transfer of methyl groups and enzymes, supports the synthesis of deoxyribose, DNA, and RNA. Methylcobalamin activates the enzyme methionine synthase, which converts homocysteine into methionine. It also promotes creatine synthesis.

Methylcobalamin supports the formation of the myelin sheath and enhances the growth and regeneration of nerve cells. It participates in the synthesis of the lipotropic factor choline. Methylcobalamin has nootropic effects and prevents the degradation of brain cells.

Methylcobalamin is essential for hematopoiesis. It promotes the maturation of erythrocytes. It is involved in the synthesis of sulfhydryl group-containing compounds in erythrocytes, increasing their tolerance to hemolysis.

Methylcobalamin activates the blood coagulation system, increasing prothrombin and thromboplastin activity in high doses. It lowers cholesterol levels in the blood and positively influences liver function. It enhances tissue regeneration capacity. It has an anabolic effect and increases physical performance.

Solgar’s sublingual methylcobalamin tablets are absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

Solgar’s methylcobalamin is suitable for vegetarians, which is especially important since B12 is typically only sourced from animal-based foods.

Indications:

  • Pernicious anemia, megaloblastic anemia
  • Chronic anemia associated with B12 deficiency (Addison-Biermer disease, alimentary macrocytic anemia)
  • As part of complex therapy for anemia (including iron-deficiency anemia, posthemorrhagic, aplastic anemia, and toxic and/or drug-induced anemia)
  • Diabetic neuropathy, peripheral neuropathy
  • Optic nerve atrophy, relief of symptoms associated with glaucoma, improved vision
  • Reduced gastrointestinal motility, poor appetite, hypotrophy (has an anabolic effect), chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, liver failure, pancreatitis, ulcerative colitis
  • Peripheral neuritis: subacute complex degenerative changes in the spinal cord, trigeminal neuralgia, intercostal neuralgia, lumbago, radiculitis
  • Funicular myelosis, mechanical and toxic damage to nerve trunks, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome
  • Pain syndrome in peripheral and central nervous system diseases, cardialgia, post-stroke conditions
  • Depression, stress, sleep disturbances, fear of death, migraines
  • Memory loss/cognitive decline
  • Cardiovascular diseases associated with elevated homocysteine levels
  • Skin diseases: psoriasis, photodermatosis, herpetiform dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, neurodermatitis
  • Urticaria
  • Asthma (especially sulfite-sensitive cases)
  • Male infertility, oligospermia, impotence, physical exhaustion
  • Tinnitus
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome, muscle weakness

For prevention purposes, it is used in:

  • Cases of high-dose use of biguanides, para-aminosalicylic acid, or ascorbic acid
  • Diseases of the stomach and duodenum that impair B12 absorption (partial resection of the stomach or small intestine, Crohn's disease, celiac disease, malabsorption syndrome, sprue)
  • Acute radiation sickness

Dosage:

Adults should take 1 sublingual tablet daily, preferably with a meal. Place the tablet under the tongue for 30 seconds before swallowing.

Consult a physician during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or if side effects occur.
