The Amibac injectable solution acts bactericidally against a broad spectrum of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.
Each 2 ml ampoule contains:
250 mg or 500 mg amikacin sulfate equivalent to amikacin, USP
Injection water BP as needed
Amibac acts bactericidally against a broad spectrum of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Amikacin is particularly active against the following Gram-negative bacteria: Pseudomonas spp., Proteus spp. (including both indole-positive and indole-negative forms), Providencia spp., microorganisms of the Klebsiella-enterobacter-serratia group, Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter spp., Salmonella, Shigella, Mineha-Herellae, Citrobacter freundii, and Providencia spp.
Amibac is also used against Gram-negative organisms resistant to gentamicin and tobramycin. Among Gram-positive bacteria sensitive to amikacin, Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains, is noteworthy. Amikacin is effective against some Gram-positive organisms such as Streptococcus pyogenes, Enterococcus, and Diplococcus pneumoniae.
Amibac is recommended for short-term treatment of severe infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. It can also be used in known or suspected staphylococcal infections.
Amibac is primarily administered intramuscularly. For life-threatening infections or patients where intramuscular administration is not possible, intravenous administration is used either as a slow bolus injection (2-3 minutes) or infusion (0.25% over more than 30 minutes). After administration of the recommended dose by I/M or I/V route, clinical improvement in uncomplicated infections should be seen within 24-48 hours. If no clinical response occurs within 3 to 5 days, alternative therapy should be considered.
In adults and children, the recommended dose is 15 mg/kg/day, divided into two equal doses (equivalent to 500 mg B.I.D. in adults). For children, the dosage should be precisely calculated based on body weight.
Amikacin crosses the placental barrier rapidly, posing a potential risk of ototoxicity to the embryo.
Store in a cool, dry place at temperatures not exceeding 30°C. Protect from light.
